Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel vented on Twitter on Saturday night,
setting off a social media storm Sunday.
“Bull[expletive] like tonight is a reason why I can’t wait to leave College
Station … whenever it may be,” the tweet read.
The unspecific complaint was deleted soon after, but some of the Heisman
Trophy winner’s 360,000 followers had already taken note.
Manziel followed up with a new post in the wee hours of Sunday morning:
“Don't ever forget that I love A&M with all of my heart, but please
please walk a day in my shoes.”
Manziel, who will be a redshirt sophomore, will be eligible to declare for
the NFL draft following the 2013 season. His parents and younger sister live in
Bryan, which neighbors College Station.
Manziel has talked about struggling with the scrutiny that has come with his
celebrity, perhaps unprecedented for a college athlete. He said in April that
coach Kevin Sumlin had brought in an undisclosed person to help Manziel deal
with being overwhelmed with demands and negativity. At the same time, Manziel
has continued to lead a vivid social life, including a recent trip to Miami for
the NBA Finals. Many of his off-the-field excursions are documented by Manziel
himself via social media.
Manziel took this spring a self-imposed break from Twitter, which lasted 17
days.
